This article provides an analysis of the causes of damage to vortex flowmeter sensors for steam measurement (field application cases):




A business specializing in dry cleaning has several sub-workshops. The thermal power plant supplies steam to them through a main pipe and installs a differential pressure vortex mass flowmeter as a total meter.


In order to facilitate independent accounting, each workshop has installed a vortex flowmeter with temperature and pressure compensation function as a sub-meter.


This has been working for nearly two years and the measurement is still accurate.  The sum of the measurements in each sub-meter is approximately equal to the reading in the general meter.  There was a sudden increase in the reading error between the sum of the sub-meters and the total meter last month.


After investigation, under the condition that the downstream sub-meters are all closed, the total meter readings have been accumulating, so it is determined that the total meter has errors and needs to be returned to the factory for maintenance.


After the general meter was dismantled, about three or four days later, a vortex flowmeter in the sub-meter suddenly and unreasonably increased its reading by three to four times.


When the valve is finally closed, the vortex flowmeter stops working, but as soon as the valve is opened, the reading reaches the maximum.


The temperature sensor, pressure sensor and flow totalizer were tested by replacement method, and it was confirmed that the piezoelectric probe of vortex flowmeter was damaged.  We have to return to the factory for repair.


About two days later, another vortex flowmeter had the same problem.


There must be other reasons for the same problems one after another.


The installation of the pressure relief valve was found at the scene, but the action of the steam pressure relief valve was not seen. In fact, the steam pressure relief valve had already stopped working, so the problem became very clear.




A few days ago, the temperature rose rapidly, with the ambient temperature around 35 degrees.


The thermal power plant is located next to the dry cleaning workshop. The steam loss is reduced, the steam pressure is increased, and there is no pressure reduction and stabilization by the pressure reducing valve.


Steam has a great impact on the piezoelectric probe of vortex flowmeter, causing the steam flowmeter to be easily damaged.
